CanSkate is the learn-to-skate program for beginners of all ages and is tailored to each user-group (e.g. pre-school, youth, adult). Participants earn badges while they learn fundamental skating skills. Participants are generally taught in group lessons by a certified professional coach. Carefully trained Program Assistants (Test or Competitive Program skaters who are sometimes referred to as amateur coaches) also work with CanSkate members.

The CanSkate program teaches six fundamental movements: GO forward, GO backwards, STOP, TURN, SPIN and JUMP organized in six stages of learning, with an optional 7th level for skaters wishing to progress into figure skating. The skills are arranged in progressions, from very simple to the more complex. Each stage has a primary focus and once the skills on each stage are mastered, a badge is awarded.

CanPowerSkate teaches balance, power, agility, speed and endurance skills and is particularly geared towards hockey and ringette players. CanPowerSkate participants should be skaters aged approximately six or older who have already acquired the basic forward and backward skating skills and are able to stop on command without use of the boards. Hockey and ringette skaters in the CanPowerSkate Program must wear full CSA approved hockey equipment.
